What is Senbei?
The origin of SENBEI (Japanese traditional snack) goes back to 1200 years ago, when Kuukai (a Buddhist priest) brought them back from China. This long history tells that Senbei has been an extremely familiar snack to Japanese people. Senbei is simply baked sticky rice, flavored with soy sauce usually, so it is very crispy and not too sweet. It is a great snack as it fills up your stomach. The reason for its round shape is unknown, but it was already very popular in Edo period. Of course, we see many Senbei shops (selling strictly Senbei only) all over Japan, even today.
